No Pet Or Horse Left Behind Nor Alone. For All Other Animals, We Pledge Our Very Best

At the Rise Above It-Let’s Do It Holistic Healing Ranch for Animals and People, we believe that trust is the fundamental currency of healing. Many of our rescues arrive with invisible wounds—fear, hypervigilance, and a deep-seated suspicion of human presence. Conversely, our visitors at the Paws Playland Amusement Center for Animals often seek to deepen the bond with their well-adjusted companions through structured, positive interaction. In both instances, the solution lies in the intentionality of play. Trust-building games are not merely distractions; they are carefully orchestrated exercises in communication, confidence, and mutual respect that bridge the gap between two different species.

For the rescued animals at our ranch, these small-group sessions are the first steps toward reclaiming their agency. When an animal has been abused or neglected, the world feels like a place where they have no control. By engaging in low-pressure, choice-based games, we allow the animal to decide how and when to interact. We focus on games that reward curiosity and celebrate small victories. When a formerly fearful horse chooses to walk toward a human for a shared grooming session, or a rescue dog nudges a ball in a sensory-rich environment, they are rewriting their internal narrative, shifting from "I must defend myself" to "I am safe to explore."

For our guests at Paws Playland, the goal is slightly different yet equally vital. Even for non-abused animals, consistent, high-quality play is the bedrock of a healthy relationship. Our structured games help owners move beyond simple fetch or tug-of-war, introducing cognitive challenges that stimulate the animal’s mind and strengthen the handler’s leadership. By engaging in games that require focus, coordination, and patience, the animals learn to look to their humans for guidance, reinforcing a partnership built on trust rather than dominance.

Whether you are working with a healing rescue or a happy family pet, the philosophy remains the same: play must be voluntary, low-stress, and consistently positive.

Recommended Trust-Building Games for Your Animal Companions

To help you get started, we have compiled a selection of our most effective strategies used at the Ranch and Paws Playland. These exercises are scalable, meaning they can be modified depending on the size, species, and confidence level of the animal.

Game Name

Primary Objective

How it Works

"The Follow-Me" Walk

Establishing rapport & focus

The handler changes pace and direction frequently. The animal receives praise/treats for matching the handler’s movement.

Choice-Based Grooming

Reclaiming agency

Offer a brush or tool; let the animal choose to approach. If they move away, stop. This teaches the animal they have a voice.

Scent Scavenger Hunt

Building confidence

Hide treats or familiar scents in safe hiding spots. Encourages the animal to investigate their surroundings without human pressure.

Mirroring Movement

Synchronizing energy

The human imitates the animal’s movements (e.g., grazing posture, sitting, slow walking). Builds a silent, non-verbal connection.

The "Go-Touch" Target

Creating positive associations

The animal learns to touch a specific object (a ball, a hand, or a cone) with their nose or paw for a reward. Builds confidence in engagement.

Parallel Play

Reducing social anxiety

Two animals (or human and animal) engage in calm activities side-by-side without direct contact, showing the "other" is safe.

Note: Always ensure the environment is free of distractions or triggers that might cause the animal distress. Observation is key; if an animal exhibits signs of stress—such as flattened ears, stiff body language, or excessive panting—scale back the activity and allow for a cooling-off period.

At Rise Above It, we believe animals transform through the power of play. When we invite an animal to play as an equal partner, we aren't just teaching them to follow commands; we are teaching them to trust the world again. We invite you to join us in this practice. By prioritizing play over performance, we foster environments where animals and people don’t just exist alongside one another—they thrive together, one game at a time.
